Free variation

In linguistics, free variation is the property of a set of expressions stating that each of the expressions are mutually interchangable.

However, linguists commonly accept that there is no free variation: whenever two expressions are different, there is at least some minute semantic or stylistic difference. Though there are expressions interchangable in most contexts, they can never be interchangable in all contexts.[cite:@ranta2004grammatical]
