Vertex of a parabola

Definition

The vertex of a parabola is defined as the "tip" of the parabola — the point at the intersection of the parabola and a vertical bisection.

The vertex may be found by rewriting the quadratic into "vertex form," the intermediate state used in completing the square: A(x+h)2+k. Then, the point (−h,k) is the vertex.

The y-component of the vertex is the minimum of the function, if the function is increasing, or the maximum if the function is decreasing.
