Conjunctive suffix (Korean)
In Korean, the conjunctive suffix (-고),-고 is sometimes pronounced as -구 in casual settings, especially amongst younger women. is used to connect clauses, mark successive action, and to connect main verbs to certain auxiliaries.[cite:@talktomeinkorean2015talka@wiktionary:78881847]
In the case of successive action, it can be thought of as an ellipsis of 그리고.
- 맙을 먹고 갈게요.
I'll go after eating.
- 호모토피 유형 이론 배우고 싶어요.
I want to learn homotopy type theory.
- 이 책은 재미있고 싸요.
This book is interesting and cheap.
- 몬스터 에너지 마시고, 애더럴 먹고, slop 먹어요. 죽고 있어요.
I drank Monster Energy, took Adderall, and ate some slop. I am dying.
While English requires the tenses of two connected clauses to agree, Korean imposes no such requirement. Most native speakers keep everything in present tense, only bothering to conjugate the final verb into past or future tense.
- 어제 친구를 만났어요. 그리고 영화를 봤어요.
Yesterday I met a friend. And then watched a movie.
- 어제 친구를 만났고 영화를 봤어요.
Yesterday I met a friend and watched a movie.
- 어제 친구를 만나고 영화를 봤어요.
Yesterday I met a friend and watched a movie.
- 내일은 영화를 보고 쇼핑하러 갈 거예요.
As for tomorrow, I will watch a movie and go shopping.
Auxiliaries
-고 is also used to connect the "main verb" to certain auxiliaries, as in the constructions -고 싶다 and -고 있다.
